BabyTraditional Chinese medicine is a complete health system that has a long history of enhancing fertility. Practitioners of Chinese medicine view the body as an integrated whole, addressing imbalances to improve overall health, while strengthening the reproductive system to promote optimal fertility. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a unified medical system that integrates well into Western medical treatment for clients who are using assisted reproductive technologies.

Each fertility client receives a detailed TCM pattern diagnosis which is used to formulate an individualized treatment plan. TCM pattern diagnosis involves analyzing individual signs and symptoms to determine the specific imbalances that may contribute to infertility. This pattern diagnosis also characterizes a person’s overall health. This lays the foundation of the treatment plan which may include the following:

Acupuncture and IVF

A growing body of research supports the positive effects that acupuncture has on the success rates of in vitro fertilization (IVF). Research published in the February 2008 issue of The British Medical Journal (BMJ), concluded that acupuncture given with the embryo transfer improves pregnancy and live birth rates of women undergoing IVF. Research findings published in the 2002 issue of Fertility and Sterility, Volume 77, also reported greater IVF success with acupuncture treatments before and after the transfer. The timing of acupuncture treatments with IVF transfers is an important factor when mapping out the treatment plan. Our combined schedules allow us to be available for IVF transfer treatments seven days a week.

Advanced Maternal Age

Women over the age of 35 can influence their reproductive system to promote greater health and balance. There are many factors that can be addressed by acupuncture in the process. Taking better care of our bodies in general will help to promote overall good health and well being. Eating well, sleeping well, exercising, and reducing stress go a long way to help improve reproductive health. Many women find that changing negative thought patterns and finding spiritual balance also helps to reduce stress in their lives. Acupuncture can be used to address two specific areas that naturally decline with age: ovarian and hormonal function. Blood flow to the ovaries naturally declines as we approach our 40s. Acupuncture has been clinically proven to increase ovarian blood flow and function. Acupuncture can also influence hormone functions to encourage the ovaries to be more responsive to the hormonal rhythms that are required for healthy ovulation.

"I began going to Michelle after more than a year of trying to conceive naturally and as I was starting infertility treatment. For the next year and a half I looked forward to my weekly acupuncture appointments. Michelle is very knowledgeable about both traditional infertility treatments and complementary therapies. She answered questions in a calm and caring way, was very encouraging and was never rushed. I left each appointment feeling confident that I was increasing my chances to become pregnant. Most importantly, I left each week feeling relaxed – what a difference from how I felt leaving each fertility clinic appointment! I continued to see Michelle through out my pregnancy and am thankful for the role she played in helping me become a parent. "

"I first started coming to Michelle because I was having trouble getting pregnant. After trying for almost a year, an OB-GYN was ready to put me on fertility drugs, but I wanted to try a more holistic approach first. So I found Michelle who recommended acupuncture for three months first. After two months of weekly acupuncture, my husband and I successfully got pregnant. I continued seeing Michelle during my pregnancy, and the acupuncture experience helped me have very few negative symptoms throughout the trimesters. I loved looking forward to spending a tranquil 45 minutes in one of the three rooms, relaxing and listening to calming music, knowing that I was providing good energy for my body and growing baby. My last acupuncture appointment was just a couple of weeks before my son was born, and I approached birth feeling ready and healthy. Thank you for all your support and great work, Michelle! "

"I have seen Dave many times over the past couple of years, including during my pregnancy, and he is always a great listener, gentle and knowledgeable. His treatments are excellent and he offers very useful advice for home care, including herbs, nutrition suggestions, etc. His office is in a beautiful, light-filled Victorian – a relaxing and rejuvenating space. I always look forward to our sessions and leave feeling like I’ve done something wonderful for my physical and mental well-being! "
